Born in Zwartsluis, The Netherlands, Fenna Adriana Schaapman, describes herself as a human polder: a momentary consciousness reclaimed from the shadowy sea of the subconscious and in constant danger of inundation. Although immigrating to inland Alberta at 18 months, ocean tides and what they swirl to the surface still inform much of her writing. She calls her genre, process poetry, poetry that risks wading into the scary waters of reality to discover floating.
From Songs My Shadow Sings Me:
What You May Learn From A Flute
How to be silver.
How to be hollow and full.
How to vibrate.
How to stand out in a melody
.
How to crescendo.
How to float on air and sink into the soul.
How to be mellow. How to be piercing.
How to haunt.
How to weep and carry a tune.
How to fit together.
How to come apart.
How to sparkle. How to energize.
How to be heard long after
your song is complete.
